The Way of St Augustine

Welcome to The Way of St Augustine website. On these pages we aim to bring you further information not only about the route but also about the beautiful churches and other places of interest you will pass along the way. Although the walk could be completed by the ambitious in a day, we will also supply you with details of where you can stop and break your journey and feed your body as well as your soul.

Green Pilgrimage Network

The Communities and Partnerships Framework of the Diocese of Canterbury is a member of the Green Pilgrimage Network (GPN), a global network of pilgrim cities and other sites which are sacred to many different religious traditions. They are all united in sharing a vision “of pilgrims in all continents, and the pilgrim cities that receive them, becoming models of care for the environment and leaving a positive footprint on the earth.”

The GPN Canterbury Partnership, which was officially launched on 3rd October 2014, promotes the wealth of activities taking place in the Diocese and supports initiatives that make use of the pilgrimage routes.

The Way of St Augustine

The Way of St Augustine is a 17 mile walking route connecting the Shrine of St Augustine in Ramsgate to historic Canterbury, following in the footsteps (or the wake) of St Augustine from his landing place near Pegwell Bay in AD 597, through the East Kent countryside, to Canterbury, where he established his Cathedral, and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury.
